I also taught English (in Korea), and I was transformed by the process. <br /><br />"The teachers are a bit more straightforward with their preferences, often ignoring me to talk to the "real" foreigners."<br /><br />Yeah, just expect that sort of thing, especially early on. Real relationships will usually erase such categories. I had the opposite problem:<br /><br />Foreigner? Check. Able to really understand or appreciate Korea? Not possible. <br /><br />What?! Again, though, as I formed friendships, I then became "the exception" to all these broad-brush strokes.
